BLUEFIELD - A Castlewood man was struck by an automobile and killed on U.S. 19-460 Nov. 1.
First Sgt. David Fowler of the Virginia State Police said Phillip Albert Wray, 42, was at the Fasstop Market around 6:26 p.m. and left the store on foot. Fowler said Wray was attempting to cross the four-lane highway, when he was struck by an eastbound 1995 Nissan Pathfinder operated by Michael Edward Stevenson of Bluefield, Va. The accident is still under investigation by Trooper R.L. Hamilton.
In an unrelated fatality, Fowler said the identity of the victim in an Oct. 28 crash near Pocahontas has not been established.  Trooper M.J. Nelson said the single vehicle accident happened around 11:45 p.m. on Route 644.
He said a 1985 Ford Mustang ran off the road, struck an embankment, overturned and caught fire. Nelson said the victim was burned beyond recognition and the body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for help in establishing identity.
Nelson was uncertain what caused the car to catch fire, saying the impact was heavy enough to create a possibility of the gas tank or engine to burst. That accident is also under investigation.
