Smyth County schools closed again Friday because of the weather, the ninth day the school district has lost to snow. The growing loss is impacting both spring break and summer vacation.
The district went into winter with a plan for adding the first five make-up days to the end of the school year, as of now pushing the last day of school to June 4. The next adjustment comes at spring break in April, from which are subtracted the next four make-up days. Friday’s lost day means schools will reopen April 6.
“We added five days at the end of the school year,” said School Superintendent Dr. Mike Robinson. “Now we’re going back to spring break. The next four days come off of spring break. Then we go back to the end of the year.”
If more make-up days are needed, scheduling then is up to the school board, according to Robinson.
“I hope we don’t have many more, but you never know,” Robinson said.
