Floyd girls advance in playoffs
Alan Cantrell’s final home game was like most of his first round regional games. The Lady Buffs won easily, topping eight-seed James River 71-37 at Floyd Tuesday, February 23 to advance to the Region C, Division 2 semifinals.
“It was kind of a mix of offense and defense,” Cantrell said. “Krista (Cox) hits some shots early and Carmen (Bolt) scored inside.”
Cox opened the game with a three pointer and Bolt added a free throw for a four point start. Morgan Huffard scored for the Knights, with Bolt hitting from the baseline.
Chelsea Rodriguez got a jumper at 5:34, then the Buffs scored 18 straight to finish the first quarter with a 20-poin lead.
Cox hit a three and scored on a steal, Karina Miller scored on a drive, Cox added another jumper, Emmalene Hale hit a free throw, Brittany Bourne made a jumper from the baseline, Bolt scored on a cut, Jordan Nolen made a free throw and Brittany Ingram made a three point shot for a 24-4 lead.
Hale opened the second quarter with a baseline jumper that made the run 20-0.Dakota Kennedy ended a drought of almost seven minutes with a jumper, and Cheyenne Falls converted a steal to make it 26-8.
The Buffaloes closed out the second with a 13-4 run. Bolt made two of four free throws, Haley Bolt scored on a break, Bourne hit a three, Nolen and C. Bolt made free throws, and Miller scored on a turnover and a drive to make it 39-12 at the half.
Cox opened the third with her third three pointer and the Buffaloes continued to build the lead. C. Bolt got a stickback and Miller hit a jumper for a 46-15 lead.
C. Bolt scored twice inside, then converted a three point play to make it 53-17. The Knights had a 9-8 edge the rest of the quarter as Maria Kuchenbuch hit a jumper and Hale made two free throws, scored in the post and got a rebound basket at the buzzer to make it 61-29.
In the fourth quarter C. Bolt got a stick back, Nolen and Bourne made two free throws each, C. Bolt drove the baseline for a basket and H. Bolt hit a jumper to complete the Floyd scoring.
