Glenvar girls beat Floyd 46-40

The girls’ basketball season ended with a 46-40 loss to Glenvar in the Region C, Division 2 tournament semifinals at Northwood High School in Saltville Friday, February 26. The game not only ended the Lady Buff season, but was also the final game for head coach Alan Cantrell, who is stepping down at the end of the year.
Floyd got in early foul trouble and had trouble finishing at the rim and converting free throws throughout the game. “It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” Cantrell told the media after the game.
The Buffaloes got off to the early lead, as Karina Miller made a free throw and Krista Cox hit a three pointer for a 4-0 start. After a drive by Kayla DeHart, Brittany Bourne scored on a drive.
Lyndsey Hunter made a free throw, Rachel Moore hit from the baseline, Jessi Strom hit a baseline three and Emily Looney got a lay in at the buzzer to give the Highlanders a 10-6 lead.
Ashley Trivette opened the second with a put back, with Maria Kuchenbuch getting a rebound basket and Bourne hitting a pull up jumper to cut the lead to two. Chelsea Arthur hit a three with Cox scoring on a drive for Floyd.
Strom hit a pair of threes to give Glenvar a 21-12 lead. Carmen Bolt got a lay in and a free throw to cut the lead to six at 1:31. Morgan McKee and DeHart each made one of two free throws to give the Highlanders a 23-15 halftime lead.
At the start of the third, Miller scored on a drive, Kuchenbuch hit a jumper and Bourne got a rebound basket to cut the lead to two. Hunter hit a jumper for Glenvar with Miller converting a three point play to cut the lead to one.
Hunter made two free throws and Arthur gut a baseline three at 3:39 for a six point lead. Emmalene Hale hit a bank shot and Bourne made a runner with 2:00 left to cut the lead to three.
Strom hit her fourth three of the game for a five point spread at :48. Amelia Coartney came up with a loose ball stick back and Bourne hit a three with one second left to tie the game 33-33 at the end of the third.
Jordan Nolen made the first of two free throws to give the Buffs a one-point lead at 5:59. But Floyd went scoreless over the next four minutes, as DeHart converted a three point play and scored on a drive, Strom hit a runner and made a free throw and Emily Looney made two free throws at 1:26 for a 43-24 Glenvar lead.
Bolt and Miller each made one of two free throws, and Bourne hit a three with 48 seconds left to cut the lead to 43-39. DeHart made two free throws with 1:02 left and Hunter added another with 15 seconds left to restore a seven point lead. C. Bolt got a free throw with two seconds left to finish out the game.
