Armstrong brings ApCo fight to WCC

The same stories keep repeating themselves, Delegate Ward Armstrong said Saturday.
They’re the stories of people trying to make ends meet on reduced salaries being shocked by a $500 power bill. It’s the story of the woman wearing hats and gloves indoors to keep heating bills down, even as the bills continue to climb, taking 60 percent of her income. Or the one of the woman choosing to cut back on medicine. Or the woman who owns an unoccupied rental, using very little electricity to speak of yet still getting hit with a bill north of $300.

E&H volunteers for high ranking

When it comes to community service, Emory & Henry College is no slouch.
As a matter of fact, the school is now ranked in the top six in the country for lending a hand to those in need.
“This is quite a significant achievement,” said Emory & Henry Director of Public Relations Dirk Moore.
The college received The President’s Award, the highest federal recognition for commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
Emory & Henry was picked from among 780 applications nationwide. This also makes the college the first Virginia college or university to be recognized as one of the top six Presidential Awardees since the Honor Roll was established in 2006.

County already up to speed on concussion rules

Last week, Virginia representatives talked about a bill that would require medical clearance before a player is let back on the field.
The legislation, however, is old news in Washington County, where similar policies have been in place since November.
According to Washington County Public Schools Head Athletic Trainer Beth Funkhouser, area schools have been going off the National Federation of High School Association’s policy.
“It changed in early fall,” said Funkhouser.

County eyes budget

A public hearing on the county budget is set for Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30. The county sets an annual budget and the state a biannual budget.
